Enlarged by Louis XIV, it symbolized (and still symbolises) the power of the French monarch during the 17th and 18th centuries. It still serves an important role in politics, as the site where many treaties have been signed, the most recent to end WWI; and as the place where the Parliament of France comes together to govern the country. But above all, Versailles is the greatest reminder of the monarchies of old. Saturday 29 November 2003: Versailles: probably the most well-known site in all the world (definitely in Europe). I spent Christmas with my dad's parents, and then New Year's with my mom's parents and her sister (my aunt, uncle, and cousins). And I finally got to see what Wien looks like at Christmastime (with its Christmasmarkets and decorations that aren't overdone like in the US). Vaux-le-Vicomte was built by the architect Le Vau (hence the name) at the request of the Finance Minister, Nicolas Fouquet, at the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV. The gardens were designed by Le Nôtre (a hydraulic engineer :), who also designed the gardens of Versailles. Nicolas Fouquet gave a house-warming party (though on a much grander scale than anything seen today :) in August, 1661, to which the King, Louis XIV, was invited (of course!). A few days later he was arrested and thrown in jail from which he never returned. The reason for the party: to impress the King and the other nobles by its grandness (and the wealth required to finance it), backfired because Louis XIV grew jealous at the wealth of Fouquet, and therefore wanted to get rid of him (hence the throwing him in jail part). ]]> Sat Oct 25 2003 St. Malo, France http://angelika.fotopic.net/c79787.html We were allowed to spend the morning raoming around the town of St. Malo, after having spent the night there, and before leaving for Mont St. Michel (another collection). It is possible to walk all along the ramparts of the walled-town and watch the incredible differences in the tides. At high-tide the water rushes all the way up to the walls, whereas in low-tide it is possible to walk out to the islands shown in the pictures.
